It’s always pleasing to see clients thrive, both past and present, and Sensible Investing (SITV) is no exception.
The online resource was set up in 2011 to provide information about evidence-based, or passive, investing. In that time, we produced two feature-length documentaries, 145 video blogs and seven stand-alone video series. Although we are no longer involved with SITV, at the beginning of November, the YouTube channel surpassed half a million views - a fantastic achievement given the relatively modest budget to build the platform from scratch.
So, congratulations to all at SITV. When it was first launched, there was a lack of high-quality content available to investors about evidence-based investing and the UK was miles behind other countries like the US in discussions around alternatives to active investing.
Fast forward to today and the interest and audience for this content is growing. Along with the success of SITV, the graph below from Google Trends shows how search volume for “passive investing” has increased since 2008, catching up and overtaking “active investing” in 2012.
In response to the milestone, Robin Powell, the former producer for SITV, commented in a blog post: “The success of SITV has surpassed all my expectations. At the time it was launched, there was very little awareness in the UK of the shortcomings of active fund management or the advantages of a low-cost, long-term and highly diversified approach. Although there is still a very long way to go, the message is starting to get through, and I’d like to think that Sensible Investing has played its part.”
