Throughout the last year and a half, we’ve worked on a number of videos with City, University of London that have reflected the challenges faced by both universities and young people during the coronavirus crisis.
One recent project that we have worked on with City has been a video for their Practical Politics module – a module intended to speak directly to a generation who, now more than ever before, are striving to have their voices heard on key political and social issues.
This video is intended to highlight how the module also focuses on another area just as important to today’s prospective students – employability. City wanted to reassure students that, while this is a module involving the complex theoretical side of politics, it is crucially also about honing practical skills that will allow them to pursue their passion professionally.
So, how did we accomplish this?
An explainer video was perfect for this aim. Animated icons work as an effective means to illustrate and emphasise the key details raised in the voiceover – particularly in the section that outlines the thrillingly broad array of professional fields that students can prepare themselves for, from media commentator to Member of Parliament.
The animation is also used to put more of a narrative drive behind the information being conveyed. It starts with the pages of a university prospectus, before guiding the viewer further along other visual landmarks of the student journey: the recognisable landmarks of London, followed by the office spaces they will be interning and later working in. Finally, the video ends on a shot of the globe – a conclusive visual reminder of the enormous potential that these students will have, thanks in part to a module that marries their passion for social change with the knowledge and skills required to put them on the professional ladder.
