Good audio is such an important part of many video projects, and we have a lot of kit at our disposal to help us capture the best audio for whatever filming situation we’re working in. Lapel mics, for example, are an unobtrusive option for many interview filming situations; just as a shotgun mic is ideal for capturing environmental sound or for shooting more spontaneous vox pop interviews with members of the public.
One particularly impressive piece of equipment that we have at our disposal for audio recording is the small voiceover booth that we have in our office in Digbeth, which we’ve used for a number of projects over the years.
The main feature of the booth is the studio microphone – complete with a pop shield that helps to filter out ‘plosives’ (the sharp popping sound that sometimes happens when pronouncing consonant sounds like ‘b’ and ‘p’). This microphone is connected to our main editing computer via an audio interface, which allows us to record high-quality audio directly to Adobe Audition for editing later.
The inside of the booth is coated with an insulating material that helps to cancel out most noises from outside; and it is also equipped with a small lamp so that a presenter can easily read from their script while recording.
The voiceover booth has most often been used to create the “intro” and “outro” monologues that appear on podcasts produced by our sister company, Regis Media. It is also a particularly ideal tool for animated explainer videos.
When working on the International Welcome series with Birmingham City University, we had a voice artist come in to read the script for each video. Thanks to the convenience of the voiceover booth, we were able to create a very comfortable atmosphere for recording the script – as well as for directing the artist’s delivery of the lines, and discussing the finer points with the client.
